I remember the first mid-year review of my career. I was not looking forward to it.
Prior to the review, I worried that my manager would use the time to point out flaws in my work and to make suggestions for improvement. During the review, however, my manager highlighted my strengths, made suggestions on new skills I could build, and ended by asking about my career interests. I was unprepared for this question, answered vaguely, and finally conceded that I needed some time to reflect.
Years later, I find the mid-year review to be an invaluable tool! I use this tool to reflect on my career interests and re-assess my career goals. Since I dedicate such a large portion of my time to work, I like to ensure that my work brings me joy. By reflecting on the past, I may choose to act differently in the present and may alter my future for the better.
Tips to Prepare for Your Mid-Year Review
Make the most of your discussion with your manager. If, as a result of your self-reflection, you are looking to make a change in your work, to build a new skill, or to explore a new experience, enlisting the help of your manager can make all the difference. The midyear review is a perfect time to discuss your goals and obtain the support of your manager.
Prepare ahead of time. By preparing, you can focus the discussion and walk away with a concrete plan. I prepare by compiling the following:
Accomplishments: things that I feel really proud of
Peer Feedback: things that my peers appreciate about me
Self Reflection: things that I have learned and ways I can refocus my time
Career Development: things that interest me for the future
Development Goals: things that I am doing to improve myself
Share your self-reflection with your manager. Doing so gives your manager a chance to think about suggestions they may have.
